Battle with the Demon (Zhu Ganglie) at Cloudy Paths Cave
Cloudy Paths CaveWukong chases the demon to a cave. The demon resumes his original form and wields a nine-pronged muckrake. They fight fiercely through the night. During the fight, the demon recounts his origin as a fallen celestial marshal, banished for misconduct in Heaven. At dawn, the demon retreats into his cave, exhausted.
Discussion with Old Man Gao in Gao Village
Old Gao VillageWukong returns to Sanzang and Old Man Gao, explaining the demon’s true identity. Old Man Gao insists the demon must be captured to protect the family’s reputation, despite the demon’s past help. Wukong debates the morality of expelling the demon, but agrees to apprehend him.
Wukong Confronts the Demon Again at the Cave
Cloudy Paths CaveWukong destroys the cave doors and calls out the demon, insulting him. The demon, angered, emerges and accuses Wukong of trespassing. They exchange accusations about each other’s wrongdoings.
The Golden Rake
Cloudy Paths CaveThe demon boasts about the divine origins and power of his golden rake. Wukong mocks it as a farm tool and demonstrates his invulnerability to its attacks.
Wukong Exposes the Demon’s True Identity and Bajie’s Submission
Cloudy Paths CaveWukong explains his mission to rescue a girl and the journey with Sanzang. Zhu Ganglie claims he was sent by Guanyin to join Sanzang. Wukong demands proof; Ganglie swears an oath and burns his cave. Wukong ties up Ganglie and drags him to meet Sanzang.
The Demon Submits to Sanzang in Gao Village
Old Gao VillageWukong brings the bound Ganglie to Sanzang. Ganglie humbly kowtows and asks to become Sanzang’s disciple, explaining his conversion. Ganglie sincerely repents, swearing loyalty and explaining his past to Sanzang.
Naming of Zhu Bajie and Farewell Feast
Old Gao VillageSanzang accepts Ganglie as a disciple. Sanzang confers the full name ‘Zhu Bajie’ (‘Eight Rules’) upon him, formally welcoming him as a disciple. Sanzang refuses gold and silver, but Bajie receives new clothes and shoes. During the farewell feast, Sanzang refuses wine, but Wukong and Bajie drink dietary wine. The group departs for the Western journey.
Approach to Pagoda Mountain
Old Gao VillageThe travelers approach Pagoda Mountain, described for its beauty. Bajie mentions knowing the resident monk, Crow’s Nest Chan Master. The group proceeds cautiously.
Encounter with the Crow’s Nest Chan Master
Old Gao VillageThe group meets the Crow’s Nest Chan Master. The Chan Master teaches Sanzang the Heart Sutra, which will aid and protect them on their journey to the West, and warns of future dangers.
