At dawn, the ironsmiths discover the weapons of Wukong, Bajie, and Wujing are missing. The princes and disciples search in vain, and Bajie accuses the ironsmiths. The old prince reassures them of the city's honesty, suggesting mountain demons may be responsible. Wukong decides to investigate the nearby mountains.

Wukong's Transformation and Surveillance

Leopard Head Mountain

Wukong transforms into a butterfly and follows two demons. He learns they stole the weapons for a Muckrake Festival and plan to buy supplies with stolen silver. Wukong immobilizes them, takes their silver and identity tablets, and returns to the city.

Return to City and Report

Jade Flower County

Wukong returns with the silver and reports to the group. They deduce that Bajie's weapon's radiance attracted the demons. The group plans to recover their weapons during the Muckrake Festival.

Planning the Disguise

Jade Flower County

The brothers disguise themselves—Bajie as Shifty-and-Freaky, Wukong as Freaky-and-Shifty, and Wujing as a trader. With hogs and sheep provided by the prince, they infiltrate Tiger's-Mouth Cave and are questioned by the demon-king about the animals. Inside the cave, Bajie seizes his muckrake, while Wukong and Wujing reclaim their weapons.

Battle with Demon-King

Leopard Head Mountain

The demon-king confronts the trio, and a fierce battle ensues. As the fight drags on, the demon-king grows weak and eventually flees.

Defeat of the Demon-Spirit

Leopard Head Mountain

The golden-haired lion demon escapes to the southeast. Wukong advises against pursuit. The group destroys the remaining demons, takes valuables, and burns the lair.

Victory Report to the Prince

Jade Flower County

The disciples return with spoils, report their victory, and warn the prince about possible retaliation from the demon's grandfather.

Demon-Spirit's Flight to Bamboo-Knot Mountain

Bamboo-Knot Mountain

The defeated demon-spirit flees to his grandfather, the Ninefold Numina Primal Sage, and pleads for help to take revenge.

Preparation for Retaliation

Leopard Head Mountain

The old demon gathers his forces and returns to Leopard's-Head Mountain, where they find the aftermath of the destruction. Enraged by the destruction of his home, the demon-spirit vows revenge. Calmed by his kin, he decides to attack the city where the monks are staying.

As the demon-spirits approach, Wukong advises Sanzang and the prince to prepare defenses. The city gates are closed, guards are posted, and the disciples prepare to confront the threat.
