Hospitality at the Estate

Squire Kou hosts Sanzang and his disciples, describing lavish Buddhist halls and preparing for their meal with proper etiquette. Squire Kou explains his vow of feeding 10,000 monks. He invites Sanzang and company to stay for a month to complete the vow.

The Meal and Meeting the Family

The houseboys prepare a vegetarian meal. The squire’s wife asks after the group’s origins as the sons return home. Sanzang discusses his fourteen-year journey with the Kou brothers.

Completion Ceremony and Departure

After a week, Squire Kou hosts a Buddhist service to complete his vow. Sanzang reminds him of his own duty to continue to the west under imperial command, and prepares to depart.

Conflict Over Leaving

Bajie argues with Sanzang about leaving so soon, wishing to stay longer at the estate. Wukong intervenes and rebukes Bajie for his laziness, while Wujing finds the quarrel amusing. Squire Kou’s attempts to mediate fall flat against Sanzang’s resolve to keep the emperor’s trust.

The squire’s wife and sons urge Sanzang to stay, promising karmic reward. Sanzang firmly refuses, explaining his imperial mission cannot wait. The family grows upset and withdraws quietly.

Farewell Banquet

Squire Kou hosts a lavish farewell banquet at the estate. Bajie expresses regret at leaving the fine food, while Daoist and Buddhist priests escort the group to the city gates. At the Tenth-Mile Station, Squire Kou, with tears in his eyes, bids a final farewell to Sanzang and Bajie, promising they will always be welcome.

Taking Shelter in the Collapsed Shrine

Bright Light Travel Court

With the skies darkening and rumors of evil creatures about, the group takes refuge from a storm in a collapsed shrine. Their sleepless night is troubled by ominous sounds and fearful tales until dawn finally arrives.
